Before chemicals, we used to somerfallow about 1/4 of our tillable acres each year. Usually we had planted sweet clover with oats the previous year. We waited until the sweet clover was 5 -7 ft. tall and then plowed it under in our heavy clay soil. It was a great way to incorporate humus into the soil, plus the nitrogen the sweet clover left in the soil.
I don't know if anyone is even doing cost vs. benefits between somerfallow and using chemicals (including fertilizer). There has to be a point where the grower would be better off somerfallowing than using fertilizer and chemicals, depending on the cost of fertilizer, selling price of grain and difference in yields. If you pay too much to gain an increase in yield, is it really a good business practice? When commodity prices are high, it's a no-brainer; when commodity prices are low, somerfallow is something to consider. Work the pencil.
