It's 13 years for me. Prostate cancer was the farthest thing from my mind. Even though I was going in for a wellness check every six months I'd never even heard of a PSA test until the doctor called me at home and told me I had flunked it. Biopsy confirmed, and a couple of months later I had prostatectomy, and I've been clear since.
By all means get checked, guys, but if you test positive be sure you explore all possible remedies before committing to surgery. Some new treatment regimes have come along since I was on the table, some that don't involve surgery. Explore them all. Surgery may ultimately be the best choice, but remember that your urologist is a plumber and a surgeon. He will have a bias toward surgery because he knows that by removing the prostate he will most likely solve the problem, quickly and cleanly---from his point of view.
