I did a little research and if what I find is true John Wayne did his level best to avoid service in WWII applying for deferment after deferment. I also found that several claims have been made that he was 4F yet there are documents saying he was 1F. The 4F claims say that it was due to a knee injury from college ball, or a shoulder injury from surfing or injuries to his back suffered performing his own stunts. He was finally declared 2F, fit to serve but of greater value to the war effort as an actor at the request of his studio.
I did find where it says he did a USO tour in 1944, Guadalcanal was declared secure in in Feb 43.
But in any event he wouldn't have been on the line. He would have been in the most secure area they could have had him in.
Another search failed to turn up ANY info on Puller meeting Wayne at all. The only place I've heard that was the documentary that Wayne narrated about Puller.
There are claims that I discount saying Wayne avoided serving because he knew he would become a major star with all the other actors out of town so to speak actually serving. I discount because all he was prior to WWII was a grade B actor. There is no way he could have known that he was going to be one of the few actors who would avoid serving.
I think here it's a matter that the whole truth will never be known and each person will believe what he wants. But the cloud of doubt over the whole thing is enough to say that he doesn't deserve a day until everything is cleared up.

But alas, my carb foiled me again, it would fire a second then flood out. After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga
