While John Wayne never served in the military (he was 34 in 1941), he WAS on Guadalcanal in 1942. He was (obviously) good friends with John Ford who was on the island during the battle (he headed a documentary film unit while on active duty USN). He(Ford)arranged for Wayne to travel to the island. He became good, (as in - life long) friends with (then) LtCol Lewis B.(Chesty) Puller, whom he met while there.
