In addition to the other reasons mentioned here, another reason for no response to email may be that the person's email provider sees the incoming message as spam and either moves it to the junk folder or deletes it before it even gets to the person with the ad. This is because CL uses a forwarding scheme to obscure both parties' real email addresses. I've been a victim on both ends of this -- emails that I sent were never received (or received long after the fact) because they went to the seller's junk mail, and email replies sent to me weren't received for the same reason.
Personal opinion: I prefer to make first contact via email, and I prefer people contact me via email.
Email is typically much more convenient for both parties, not requiring immediate attention or scheduling. Many times I've been interested in things being sold by someone who works odd hours/days and trying to find a window when we're both available for even a simple phone call has been difficult.
Often I'll come across something while browsing CL during a lull at work and don't have time (or the privacy) for a non-work phone call, but it's easy to send a quick email to at least let the seller know I'm interested. I don't want something to get away from me just because I can't drop everything to make a call.
Although I'm not deaf like another person mentioned, I do have trouble hearing on the phone, whereas email is perfectly clear.
Sometimes the item I'm interested in isn't local and I'd rather not make an hour-long drive just to see (for example) how bad some rust is, so it's kind of stupid to call just to ask for pictures via email.
I'm with others who don't quite get why people are tech-savvy enough to post CL ads but then don't want to deal with emails. I read and respect what others have said, but IMHO if you're going to post something electronically, you should be willing to respond electronically. Saying that if someone isn't able to call means he's not serious about buying is no different from me saying as a buyer that if the seller won't respond to email then he's not serious about selling. Everyone has different needs and preferences. If you're serious about selling something, I'd think you'd want to leave every avenue of communication open. :?

Today's Featured Article - Grain Threshing in the Early 40's - by Jerry D. Coleman. How many of you can sit there and say that you have plowed with a mule? Well I would say not many, but maybe a few. This story is about the day my Grandfather Brown (true name) decided along with my parents to purchase a new Ford tractor. It wasn't really new except to us. The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
