Freedom of the press only means that the press is able to print whatever they want to without LEGAL repercussions. That is, the government cannot legally censor what is printed. There can be restrictions on what may be printed in certain venues. BUT, that is not to say that the same material restricted in one venue may not be printed in another. A good example is the nudie magazines. They cannot print that type of material in a family oriented publication, but in their own little smutty world, even Larry Flynt can publish whatever he wants. Freedom of speech is limited by the fact that you cannot yell "FIRE!" in a crowded theater. You do not have that right - unless there really is a fire. The economics of the whole thing is another story. If you are depending on advertising revenue from a company, it is not in the publisher's best interest to offend that advertiser. Also note that we ALL carry the power to censor. The power of the wallet is the mightiest power of all in a capitalistic society. And, that power was exercised in this case by the offended advertiser. There is no violation of the first amendment in this case. Cartoonist published, customer reacted, and employer reacted to that reaction. Simple exercise of the power of the wallet.
