That's seems far enough away for a home wifi. I know our laptop works in the backyard but I haven't tried it at the barn.
However, wifi can do strange things. I remember on various overnights at hotels I could sometimes pick up wifi from hotels that were 300 or 400 meters away and not be able to pick up the one for the hotel I was in. Radio waves can do strange things.
That said, I wouldn't put it past verizon or any of those companies to try to hose people. I know AT&T tried it on me. Our verizon useage has spiked at times but so far I've been able to account for it.
