I went to start the Oliver 1550 gas. Just as I let off the key,it kicked back. The starter made one gawdawful noise when I tried again and wouldn't turn the engine. I figured it broke that coil spring on the starter drive. I unbolted it,slid it out and the whole end was broke off the nose cone. Great! I took the darned thing to the auto parts store and they confirmed what I suspected,no core on one with broken parts. I told them to hold off,I'd take it to the starter shop and see if she might possibly have a used nose cone that would fit it. When I walked in,she had about four other starters torn apart on the bench. She stopped what she was doing,looked around the shop,went outside and came back in with one. She said it just needed a new bushing. I had planned to just bring it home and fix it myself,but she took it apart and went to work on it. Good thing she did. The end was broke off the starter drive too and I hadn't noticed. She couldn't find a new one,but kept looking and found a good used one. She got it all together and tested it. It was dragging. She took it back apart and the end cap was sprung where the armature must have kicked back in to it. She looked for another one but wasn't having much luck. I told her if I had it at home,I'd lay it on the anvil and hammer it back flat. So that's what she did. Another test and it ran good. She must have messed with that thing for at least a half hour while I waited. When she was all done,the bill was $15.
