A couple of years ago, my left shoulder started hurting after a week of dog-sitting for my daughter and walking 4 high-energy (pulling) dogs at one time. Couldn't sleep on it and it would make a pop noise when I moved it upward. Doc looked at it and we decided to see if it improved. It slowly got better so it didn't hurt all the time but I couldn't sleep on it and my range of motion and strength had diminished. Last year, I had x-rays, an MRI done and visited a surgeon. He said that there were no current tears or tendon damage but I had osteoarthritis in it. Also had "goat's beard" deposits on it. Both probably from a combination of the injury and just plain getting old. Surgeon gave me a list of options from "do nothing, take Advil for pain" to complete shoulder replacement (likely a year of recovery with no guarantee of improvement). He said shoulders don't seem to do as well as hips or knees with replacements. I opted for the "do nothing" approach. At 65, I didn't want to waste a year of my life trying to recover.
Since then, I exercise it to improve strength and range of motion. I don't baby it or let it limit what I do. It's still not perfect but it's getting a lot better. I only have to take Advil after I've used it real hard doing projects or chores. It does hurt if I bang my arm or elbow on something and I can't work in tight places with it. Have to use my other arm. But hey, I'm over 65 and can still walk, ski, climb ladders, do projects which is more than a lot of people my age can do. So I'm thankful for what I have in the way of health.
