I am restoring a '64 Ford 4000, 4 cyl. gas tractor. Installed a new battery last night. "Pucker Factor" was high as I have never attached the positive post of a battery to a ground wire before. I have a couple of questions if anyone can help: 1. How many cranking amps are required? This new battery will barely turn the motor over. It could be a battery which has been on the shelf a while, I guess. Voltage tester reads over 6 volts, however. Ford Repair Manual does not mention minimum cranking amps. 2. How would you jump start this backwards grounded system? I have a lawn mover which is 6 volts also, but should I attach + to +, - to frame, or vice versa? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Tommy D....
