They can be pretty bad! An unnamed parts store had "life time" alternators and starters. Had a reputation of install one and go get another cause the one just installed was going to fail! That was my past experience with Auto Zone. I want to do a repair once and forget about it, not do it over and over and over. I'd rater pay for a part once every 5 years and be good for another 5 than to get a free replacement once a year.
Think about it. Most folks who go and get a part like an alternator or starter are most likely not going to have that vehicle much longer. It's a win for the parts store. They sell the item, end user puts it on then in 6 months or so trades the vehicle. When it fails 2 months later the "new" owner is stuck with buying the part all over again. And then too will get rid of the "problem" vehicle. What a racket!
