: i am working on a super a ...i think the generator is shot.. i was needing to know if i could cane it over to a 12v neg system . ive never work with a 6v pos ground and i didnt know if the starter or the ign. would work ??? A good automotive electrical shop can fix your generator for less than the price of a new alternator and battery (less than either one). Have you checked the voltage regulator by replacement? or is it just a cutout? That same shop can adjust or replace those. Otherwise to change you need an alternator, battery, lights, and that ballast resistor for the coil. Or a 12 volt coil. But Ford 12 volt coils use a resistor anyway. And you need to interchange the coil primary leads on your old coil if you use it with a resistor. You will wish a 12 volt starter solenoid if there is one instead of a foot switch. The 6 volt starter solenoid coil will dissipate 4 times as much heat on 12 volts and will expire in time. I prefer to see a 6 volt system well cared for, e.g. clean battery cable connections, FAT battery cables, and it will run for a long time. If the connections aren't cleaned it won't run a long time. I used to clean the posts and connectors on my 6 volt Ford until they shined and then put them together and had no problems for months at a time in daily use. There are protective sprays that can sometimes prolong battery connections once the connections are cleaned well and assembled tightly.
