: Ken, It sounds like you have a tooth off of a gear. Now just which one is hard to say. Happy : hunting. : Randy : : I have a 1940 Ford 9N which has the usual growl in the transmission when being operated. When pulling under load, the usual gear growl occurs, but when the engine is holding back the tractor as if going down a grade the transmission has a very fast occurring click or "clatter" in the transmission which is quite loud. In reverse it does likewise. When the engine is driving the tractor in reverse it sounds normal, but when the engine is holding back the tractor the clatter is heard in reverse, also, quite loud. : : I think I know what is the problem, but would like to hear some advice from the wise sages of this bulletin board. : : The noise is driving me nuts, but I just don't wanna break another tractor in half to fix it!! : : Ken McWilliams : : Dayton, Ohio Have no fear, one broken tooth will lead to another (that click is a hammer blow on the next good tooth) and another and soon it will quiet but stationary. Gerald
