JD 1947 B - not charging??

Just put a new generator, regulator and ammeter on my 1947 JDB. Ammeter registers a charge when idling but goes to discharge as soon as I open the throttle. What's happening?? I polarized the generator and have checked all the wiring. Battery is not new but has enough power to start the tractor every time. Any ideas?
