After three years of changing things out and trying different things I think I may have finally stumbled on the problem. I borrowed the distributer from my brothers 3000 and it ran like a top with no backfire, stumble, or misses. So I knew the problem was in the distributer. After removing it and spinning it a few times in my hand, I noticed that the points were not fully closing after the plastic head dropped off of the shaft lobe. The rear area of the points plastic slider was still touching the lob preventing the points from fully closing till it was past the raised area. The problem is with the points. For some reason these points have a slot in both the base and the adjustable ends on the mounting ears of the points. If the base end of the points isn't pushed all the way out away from the center before tightening, it will allow the bottom end of the plastic slider to contact the shaft lobe after the head has dropped off. Of course being a three cylinder the lobes are much longer leaving a greater chance for this to happen. Since this is the second set of same style points I've installed, I must have set them much the same way allowing the points to stay open too long. If the bottom end of the points would just be a hole and not slotted, there wouldn't be a problem. I'm either going to look for points that only have a slot on the adjusting end, or convert to electronic ignition. I've completely dismantled the distributor and it seems to be in good condition with little or no visible wear. So I think I'll keep it. Anther strange one to put in the troubleshooting archive. Just want to thank all the guys for their suggestions and help getting me to this conclusion. One last question, has anyone tried the electronic ignition systems sold on this site? Any pro's or con's about doing it??? It sure wouldn't break my heart to never have to put points in it ever again... Thanks Joe
