These guys sound like machanics must be the worst thing. I think it could be a bad trust washer or bearing. might even be as simple as a bad key on one gear. If it was a broken tooth you would feel it under all load conditions not just when you use the tran and motor to control down hill speed or as a brake. I'd say the rear bearing on the main shaft. Or the idler gear bushing after fiftynine year wear will happen. Because it sounds like there is lateral movement and the gears are hitting. Which could lead to a broken gear. So use your brakes to slow tractor down hill till you figure it out. Do not use the bigger hammer theory. Good luck : I have a 1940 Ford 9N which has the usual growl in the transmission when being operated. When pulling under load, the usual gear growl occurs, but when the engine is holding back the tractor as if going down a grade the transmission has a very fast occurring click or "clatter" in the transmission which is quite loud. In reverse it does likewise. When the engine is driving the tractor in reverse it sounds normal, but when the engine is holding back the tractor the clatter is heard in reverse, also, quite loud. : I think I know what is the problem, but would like to hear some advice from the wise sages of this bulletin board. : The noise is driving me nuts, but I just don't wanna break another tractor in half to fix it!! : Ken McWilliams : Dayton, Ohio
