Lots of fuel injected cars use external pumps too. The cooling of the gas sloshing around the pump often lets it survive the life of the car. In a couple million km on fuel injected cars I've never done a fuel pump. My last carb'ed vehicle I did a fuel pump in less than 20,000 km, and a carb rebuild, and a manual choke conversion, and it still didn't run the best in cold weather.
