... for someone's competence today! This week the idler went out on the 7800. Got a new one and a belt as it was shredded. Deere didn't have the belt. Huh? There's lots of stuff that uses that belt!? So they rush it in as planting can't continue. I go pick it up. They had ordered in the wrong one. The belt and idler debacle ended up costing me three days.
It's finally dry enough to work fields again. Yesterday it was a bit too wet so I serviced the 8430 and found the water pump out. They didnt have that one so they ordered it for first thing this morning. So I take in the old one and have the fan hub pressed on the new one. That took 2 1/2 hours. No lie. They knew I was coming, too. Got home and put the pump on only to find that when the fan was bolted to it the blades hit the hydraulic coupler and the hoses were askew. It was 12:05. I got in the pickup and flew to town calling the service manager's cell phone the whole way. Finally got him. He lets me in and looks it up. The water pump is the wrong one by one digit. They actually had the right one in the shelf. That's handy, because I even gave the parts guy the engine serial number yesterday. So I head home to remove the pump (which weighs about 50 pounds) and he calls in one of the techs to switch the fan hub. By 3:00 I was headed home with the pump. Thank goodness for service guys that bend over backwards during planting. Got the right one put in and the driest field opened so it can be planted tomorrow. Why must I second guess every part I get?

Today's Featured Article - Talk of the Town: Winterizing Engines - To Drain or Not to Drain? - by Russ Berry. What is this strange attraction I have to equipment and machinery? How did I get this way? I came from the suburbs and own a small horse farm in rural Loudoun County, Virginia. You can call me a "weekend farmer." The local farmers do. Does it bother me? No. I am just happy to have their friendship. At least the word "farmer" is in my title. But what is the attraction? How can I explain the sensation and exhilaration I feel when I turn the key and hear the engine come to life (most
