I had a big (100+ pounds) dog that was apparently a good ratter, although I didn't realize it until after he died of cancer. Within a few months I started noticing signs of rats, and soon I started seeing them. (I suspect they were emigrating from a huge horse stable across the road.) I have outside cats, but apparently feed them too well. I only saw them catch one, and the tom who had him played a while and turned him loose. So I tried clubbing them when I saw them, which was wasted effort. So I tried trapping them and lost count at, I recall, 31, with no sign of letup. I was shocked at the quantity! Consequently, I warned my lazy cats there were going to be some poisoned rats around, so don't decide to start eating them now. It took about 10 days or two weeks and lots of poison bait, but I wiped them out. A handful seemed to be resurrected a few weeks later, but they were gone after a few more days of poison. I've decided poison is the only way to deal with a major infestation. (The biggest one I trapped measured 17 inches nose to tail.)
