I have a tractor with loader that I have constantly had problems with flats on the front (7.50 16 tri ribs). Last weekend I fixed one of the fronts 3 times and was going down again when I stopped for the day. So I decided I will try some heavy truck tires on the front, and thought I would visit a few tire dealers/shops to see if I could pick up a pair that had been removed and I might get lucky and find a set either cheap or free. I figure most if not all shops charge a "disposal fee", and I think the state also charges a fee to dispose, and I know some shops are happy to get rid of them without paying to dispose. The first two shops had none in the size I was looking for, then the 3rd shop had a pair that "might work". When I asked price it was $35 mounted or $25 out the door (I should have asked if he included a warranty :-)) . Now, I can understand the charge to mount, but $50/pair for what amounts to junk tires that someone already paid to dispose of? And my guess is he would be saving on paying to dispose of them anyhow? I passed and went on across town and found a shop that gave me a set. I certainly know which shop to visit when I go to shop for tires. Seems to be a pretty good racket if you can make money selling new tires, make money on the used take off junk tires, and save on disposal, or am I missing something here? Seems as if the worst shops to deal with are the ones with the cushy lounges where you wait while your care is in their shops, and always the sign prohibiting you from entering their air conditioned shop. I always have better luck dealing with the guy with the huge tire pile in the back and if you are lucky there is an old bus seat off to the side you can sit on while you wait.
