My understanding is the DEF system replaced the DPF system on diesel engines.
DPF burned an extra gallon of diesel fuel each time it ran through a "regen cycle" to clean the particulate filter.
Back when the DPF first came out people were having all sorts of trouble with the "regen cycles." Those complaints disappeared when trucks started coming equipped with the DEF system. Also, fuel economy on diesel trucks has gone back up to near pre-emissions levels, further indicating to me that the fuel-wasting DPF system had been done away with.
Whatever the case, a diesel truck has multiple ways to ensure that you don't run out of DEF, and if you do, you have a "grace period" before the truck de-rates the engine.
DEF is available everywhere, from any gas station that sells diesel, to dealerships, to auto parts stores, to big box stores, to farm supply stores, to Walmart...
It would be very odd in this day and age to be so far from one of these locations that you could run through a full tank of DEF and still be too far away from any of those locations to make it there before your truck's computer de-rates the engine.
Figure about 1 gallon of DEF for every 1000 miles of average driving.
