Kinda depends on your driving actually. I can go little over 4000 miles on a tank. tank is 5 gallons. Your truck is the same. No you dont need to carry any. A message will come up on the IP saying so many miles left. It gives you plenty of notice. Yes it will shut down if you run it empty but will go in Limp mode first. My first DEF GMC was a 2012 then a 2015 and now my 2016.
