I've never seen a bad piece of advise given that wasn't countered righ away by many good posts. Fred, these guys are good and schooled in the college of hard knocks. I'm amazed at their patience in inviting your serious questions after your post. My greatest aggrivation in working with any problem is usually the aggrivation. Perhaps the Tom-foolery that I get from this sort helps as much as the serious answers. I see my problems better after a good laugh anyway. As for the technical expertise offered here, I have over 25 years experience in Electronic Engineering but have never heard a more clear explanation of the difference between generators and alternators than that was offered on one of these boards. Give them a chance to help you and be prepared to laugh and learn. BTW - JB weld is the duct tape of motor mechanics.
