There are two extremes here. Those that don't care or are just plain lazy and those that are trying too hard to oversell. I took the GF's car to the dealer for a replacement ignition key. $189 plus tax for the key and cutting, $50 more to reflash the computer so that the new key would work. While they were doing that, the mechanic was taking the car apart. I had a FIT!!! They were trying to sell me a license plate light for something like $60 more plus tax. I about hit the roof. When I take a vehicle to a dealer or any other repair facility, it is for one specific thing. I do NOT appreciate them taking things apart without permission. I maintain our vehicles. I am perfectly capable of that. What I cannot do is to issue a state inspection sticker. I cannot reflash a computer. Otherwise, I spent 30 years professionally fixing other folks' cars. Bear in mind that those "multi-point" inspections are just a device to sell more service and parts. Follow the money. Also know that many of the franchise outfits pay their "technicians" low wages PLUS COMMISSION. That means that they have a vested interest in selling you repair work - whether you need it or not.
