John, those had a history of being difficult to start. The primer circuit didn't work well.
If the rubber bulb is old and hard, try replacing it. The bulb needs to be pushed in fully and quickly, you're not pumping gas with it, but puffing air into the carb bowl to push some fuel up into the intake. If it says prime it 5 times, try about 15 times!
