Not that familiar with 9N but suspect it is like my NAA. If so in about an hour you can drain oil and pull top off tranny. get a flashlight and look around. If you have a chipped gear it should be easy to see. Might even find part of the tooth in bottom of case. Good luck! : I have a 1940 Ford 9N which has the usual growl in the transmission when being operated. When pulling under load, the usual gear growl occurs, but when the engine is holding back the tractor as if going down a grade the transmission has a very fast occurring click or "clatter" in the transmission which is quite loud. In reverse it does likewise. When the engine is driving the tractor in reverse it sounds normal, but when the engine is holding back the tractor the clatter is heard in reverse, also, quite loud. : I think I know what is the problem, but would like to hear some advice from the wise sages of this bulletin board. : The noise is driving me nuts, but I just don't wanna break another tractor in half to fix it!! : Ken McWilliams : Dayton, Ohio
