When I first moved out here I started with a IHC Farmall M. I figured that was my "tractor tuition" and I used it for many years figuring out what I liked and what else I "needed". I really liked that M, it started every time, even at 25 below w/out being plugged in. It was easy to work on, but I never had to split it. I had a Farmhand F10 loader on it (the loader pretty much surrounds the tractor). Things I didn't care for were the lack of a 3-point hitch, lack of power steering, and no live power. It did what I needed it to do, but as oldtanker said, looking for a mower is what led me to buy the Ford 4000 (4 cylinder). The Ford came with a mower, a blade, and an old V-type (single stage) snowblower. Lack of live power was an issue with the IH and the loader, since I ran the loader off of a PTO pump. Lack of power steering was an issue when the 9 foot bucket was full of snow. Mine had a wide front (Schwartz?) and was plenty stable (not a lot of hills around here :( )
That said, I think I sold if for $500 a few years ago. If you could get into one of those (H or M) and a mower (belly or tow) for cheap, that would be a good option to run for a few years to figure out what else you need/want. You probably wouldn't get all of your money back out of it, but it might save you from making a more costly mistake. Pay heed to what oldtanker said, if you can't get the implements you think you are going to need for a reasonable cost that would be a show stopper. A friend of mine used his sickle mower on my tractor to hay off my pastures. When he died my wife decided she liked the cut look better, which got me searching for a mower, which became a good time to upgrade to the small Ford.

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
