Just wanted to say thanks for all of the garden pictures. Every time I look at your posts, I get hungry. Your posts inspired me and this year I decided to put in a garden. We have a small corral for my wife's two miniature donkeys right off the back yard. I liberated an area about 12 feet by 20 feet and fenced it off with cattle panels. I planted 4 kinds of squash, three rows of sweet corn, kohlrabi, turnips, and cucumbers. I then set the automatic sprinklers to water the garden when they water the yard.
My wife informed me when I started all of this that she wasn't pulling weeds. I have to say, when I was a kid I hated pulling weeds - so I don't blame her. I just decided to plant everything closer together and the plants would choke out the weeds and retain the moisture just like out in the hay field. All-in-All I would say the experiment was a success. We have had some great meals, I have been taking a lot of it to work with me for lunch, and we have supplied lots of fresh produce to the local food bank. This morning I took two bags of Patty pan, zucchini, yellow squash, corn, and turnips to my neighbor who is a widow. The big thank you when she looked in the bags was satisfaction enough.
Thanks for sharing the good ideas. It's not that much work and going out to the garden every few days is like a treasure hunt. The last picture was the stand of oats we planted for hay this year - we had a thick stand with good moisture and no weeds.
