As I explained the other day, my Ford 9N has a clatter in all 3 forward gears and reverse when the engine is holding back the tractor as when going down a grade. I've broken the tractor in half 2 times in 2 days and the problem is not yet solved. I shimmed the main gear shaft and counter gear shaft to achieve the proper pre-load on the tapered roller bearings which took out the "growl." The transmission sounds very nice when pulling, but that CLATTER is still there when slowing down. There are no missing teeth. The reverse idler seems a little loose but it's not the problem. I refilled with 140 weight gearlube and the CLATTER is still there. I talked to a fellow in the Dayton area who rebuilds about 50 fords and/or fergusons per year and my described problem had him baffled. Could it be the input shaft? The repairman that I talked to said the front tapered roller bearing doesn't have an inner race but runs directly on the input shaft's surface. Tomorrow I'll break it apart for the 3rd time. Help! HELP!! Ken McWilliams Dayton, Ohio
