I had a 2006 Dodge 5.7 Hemi Charger in today, scanned computer codes as part of a routine tune-up and found code P1521 ,which is " Incorrect Engine Oil Type ". Meaning wrong viscosity . The computer uses inputs like temperature and oil pressure plus others to calculate the oil weight. I never knew they did that ,and never saw that code come up before. It didn't set the Service Engine light on though , just stored in the memory. I asked the owner about it and he didn't know what the shop who last changed it had put in, so I changed and put the recommended oil in, which is 5W-20 non synthetic. Seems to me it would be tough to be 100% accurate in figuring out what oil was in the engine using this system given all the variables and different types of oil, synthetics , etc. Just thought it was interesting...

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
