Besides all of the above, we're in the middle of building a new $16.5 million criminal justice center, which we badly need. We're short on beds for male prisoners, plus we have no facilities for female prisoners. If the City or County brings a female prisoner in, all we can do is book her and haul her off to an adjoining county that does have facilities for females. In 2014, we spent $200,000 just boarding prisoners elsewhere, plus Deputies time and miles for transporting.
Besides a new, larger, up to code, jail, the new center will include the District Court, County Court, 911 call center, Offices for the County Attorney and her staff, and a few others all in one building. We Commissioners already have dibs on the old District Court room in the courthouse 'cause we five are cramped in our present meeting room.
