black smoke, injector problem?on Case diesel

I have a 69 Case 580 CK. Once a week, while the backhoe is running at a low idle, when the engine is recovering from a strain put on it, the rpm's go up by its self for a second, I hear a tapping sound, & it exhuasts a big black smoke cloud. A previous message said that this was caused by dirty injectors. How could injectors cause a valve tapping sound & make the rpm's rev up? Would injector cleaner fix this? The fuel tanks has been emptied w/ new fuel & Case diesel fuel conditoner added. Any help is greatly appriciated. Thanks. Jim.
