I moved a grain bin Monday and sat it up on the foundation today. Before I start adding the remaining five rings I want to properly seal up / paint in a couple spots where it appears the grain has been wet and damaged the galvanization. Looked to me like the previous owner had put some wet soybeans with a bunch of green pods in the bin. Took the pressure washer and cleaned up the inside of the bin sheets this afternoon. Pressure washing left the surface fairly smooth. All of the residue has pretty much been cleaned off. The galvanization has been "eaten" away in some spots leaving rust spots the size of half dollars. Thought I would make the repairs as the bin goes up in the air. How would you go about fixing these rusted spots?????? Some of my thoughts are: 1) Maybe rub a little of that green phosphoric acid metal prep on the rust spots to neutralize the rust. 2) Dab some rust neutralizing primer on the spots. 3) Maybe spray with some "cold" galvanizing (compound) - spray on the dried primer. That is about all I can think of. Any ideas???
