I checked the way I had it wired by turning the key with the solenoid out of the starter. Looks like I have it wired correctly because it sucks the plunger in when the key is turned. I wired in other terminals and nothing hapened there so what I did should be right.
I decided to remove the starter since I couldn't get the plunger connected to the arm for the bendix. The plunger that came with the new solenoid just wasn't designed just right for that arm, so I grabbed the plunger out of the old solenoid and used it. It was the same shape and size but had the correct end on the plunger. It installed beautifully. Buttoned everything up and hooked the wires back up.
Before, as read above, the starter was "motoring"/turning over without the bendix engaging. Now with everything hooked up, all I get is NOTHING. Sometimes a faint click. I was sure to hook everything back up good and tight and made sure nothing touched any other terminals. The dash charge light comes on with the key switch and goes off when you turn it to the momentary "start" position. Not sure if it is related, but the dash light doesn't come on sometimes and I have noticed if you wait a minute or wiggle the key it will come on. For safe measures, I changed the key switch to a new one of the same style and it is still doing that!!! Checked connections at solenoid and 12 volts to large terminal and 12 volts to the terminal with brass tang to starter.
