You know you're old enough, and the cashier knows you're old enough, but the computer doesn't and neither do the people at corporate HQ who audit the records before turning them over to law enforcement. THAT is why you need to show and ID and they need to get your birth date off of it.
Use to be when you clearly looked old enough the cashier would punch in a random birthday like 11/11/11 into the computer. Nothing stopping them from doing that for one of their underage buddies, though. So now if you want to keep your job, and not face criminal charges, you get real birth dates off of IDs. The computer raises a red flag if you use the same birth date more than once.
Yes things are getting more complicated, but they have to because people are getting more sophisticated at "beating the system."
