Short answer: NO. Not worth it, not even a little bit. The cost to be "legal" to haul makes it cost prohibitive.
I bought a rollback wrecker truck about a year ago for my own personal use hauling straw, hay, and my small tractors, etc. Thought maybe I could haul stuff here and there to offset the cost, but have yet to make a dime with it.. Have decided to leave it plated as a farm truck and use it as such.
"Commercial" insurance is a killer. Insurance for my farm use here in Michigan is $22/month, for "commercial" towing/hauling it's nearly $200/month, mostly due to liability transporting other people's "goods". Then the cost of commercial plates, and all the fun and games of compliance for DOT.
I imagine a guy could "fly under the radar", I've been guilty of it myself more than once, but sooner or later DOT will get ya.. They've stopped me, and we had a long, respectful chat about what I can and cannot do with the plates I have, what I can do if I plate my truck differently, and what is required of me to do to be in compliance with the law with either a farm or a commercial plate. My officer was real cool about stuff.

The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
