The timing tab should be spot welded to the timing cover, it should be shifted to the LH or drivers side. I guess it's possible it fell off or rusted away maybe. Look between the water pump and alternator, it's really not hidden. Timing spec is 0* but some people get away with 4*btdc or so.
The connector you need to unplug is behind or under the dash on the passenger side. Sometimes this connector is tucked up a little glove box. It's a single wire connector with a tan with black stripe wire. Simply unplug wire, set timing and plug back in.
