I do not think that the gimme crowd is the right term for this generation nor the problem. I believe it should be called the borrowing generation. Everything they buy is on credit and it is not just the individuals but just take a look at the amount of borrowing done by our governments. I will not live long enough to see our country out of debt nor will my grandchildren or even those who follow.
I was taught that you should avoid debt whenever possible. Buy only those things that you really need and even then look for good used stuff that will do the job. I remember buying used cars from local new car dealers. When they tried to show me the newer used stuff out front I said "no, no, I want to see the ones that you have out back", the junky, stinky ones that were traded in by the dairy farmers. I usually could buy a pretty good running car for $50 and run it for 2 or 3 years. For the borrowing generation it is "SIGN AND DRIVE" but never own just pile on more debt when they trade for the next one.
The borrowing generation is so heavily in debt that they really do not own anything and maybe they never will. Most will die in debt or bankrupt and getting government handouts as they go through their final years. Yes our once great country is in great danger of disappearing forever.
