i did a lot of towing and recovery here at the shop. there are specific hook points on all of the late model vehicles. most all can be hooked with an r, t, or mini j hook on a cluster. the hook up points are usually forward of the rear wheels or just behind the front wheels. there are special books that tow trucks carry to identify these points. also, many european cars have a special bolt and loop in the trunk that screws into a port (little trap door) in the bumper cover. you do need a bridle on the cluster and hook to 2 points. then slowly winch out. jerking on a chain will tear up the vehicle. another method that is popular if the vehicle has alloy wheels (spoke type) is 2 nylon choker straps that get threaded thru either the front wheels or rear wheels, then hooked to the recovery bridle. set the parking brake so the wheels dont turn and drag the vehicle out. you can also use baskets on the wheels, but they take time to set up. the other danger in "jerking" it out, if the recovery strap/chain/cable breaks, it can whip back and kill somebody. if the vehicle has a receiver hitch, you can sometimes hook to the hitch. heres a link to a picture of a tow cluster.
