I'm new to this forum, but not new to forums in general. I suspect we have a quorum of older men, usually self-made and generally conservative by nature. We are saddened by the changes we see and lament that they are not as great as the generation before.
Anyone who's read some Roman literature knows this philosophy has been going on for centuries. Yes - Rome fell. It rotted from within. Are we facing some of the same issues? Oh yes, very much so. The similarities are striking and parallels are everywhere, and they are all being ignored by those who currently govern us. But - this thread isn't about those who govern us, it's about, well - us. Those that are out there everyday, doing things, building, making, and supporting the infrastructure of this nation.
So, not to toot my own horn too much but here's the deal. The modern miracle is right under your fingertips! I've been an EE for about 35 years. I've built everything from memory chips, up to the current Internet(no, I'm not an ex-VP). I used to work on nuclear power plants, and setup much of the monitoring systems for the reactors. Currently I work on networks that support major clients like Exxon, Experian, Verizon, ATT, 3M, Warner Bros. and many other big companies. They all are here to support your desire for information, entertainment, shopping, etc.
While it's not a mach 3 airplane, the Internet is pretty darn awesome. BYW, we also send picture around the globe of people's ulcers, and spines, and other medical stuff for evaluation. And what about my kids? Well, one of them is a teacher, and he teaches everything from band, to Algebra and Calc. The other is a chemical engineer and she's designing new biologic additives for fuels that will amaze with their ability to actually eat combustion products. Weird stuff.
I think where we are falling down as a nation is that some of us(they know who they are) want to run the rest of the world, and forget about the country and the citizens that inhabit the USA. We aren't the arbiters of what's right and wrong with Syria, or S Africa, or Russia, Canada, Spain, etc. We have real problems in the US, and we need people who will work WITH us out here in the real world to provide simple infrastructure, and individual rights so we can get on with it.
Ayn Rand had some good ideas, but maybe that's just a bit too far. However, I'd like to see the US begin to recognize those who contribute, and work, and provide every day of their lives, rather than spending so much time and effort on the have-nots and slackers of the country. We are allowing a whole generation to grow up without knowing pain, hunger, strife, or even a significant challenge.
Micro-aggression? Safe zones? What happens when someone hears a word they don't like? Defining the word 'she' as sexist? In any context? I guess it's nice that we've solved all other problems that we can worry about such picayune, and obscure non-issues. We are now making things up that anger us. Anyway, I'm out there - working, fixing, designing, selling, and tuning the Internet for your viewing pleasure. Some pretty intelligent folks working with me on this.
