Gasket Coatings

I am sure someone has asked this question before, but I will ask again. What do people prefer for coatings (if any) on various types of gaskets. I have been given advice on head gaskets from no sealant to various spray on types (some head gaskets say on them to not use any gasket cement). Also, there are the gaskets that are on sheetmetal parts like oil pans. There are other gaskets such as the ones on cast iron parts. I would like to hear what other people use. An old mechanic I used to know always used grease from a grease gun on gaskets and so have I at times as it works good to temporarily hold the gasket in place. Roger
