I think many people, unlike folks on this forum, don't really value their machinery enough to look after it properly...they have the attitude, well if it goes, it's ok. Then when it stops going they sell it and pass on the lack of maintanence to someone else.
I just bought a well made, used riding mower: close inspection showed a muffler which had been knocked and was leaking others either wouldnt have noticed or wouldnt care if it's leaking a bit. I ordered a new one, so she's right. One side of battery holder missing, got a long thread to replace. Others wouldn't care.
Transmission belt worn: still works, others would have thought, well it still goes, so I can save $10 by not replacing it.
But the thing is that if something was well made to start with (unlike the vast majority of machinery today) then I think it's important to maintain them well so they last. Because the alternative is buying something new which wont last more than a few years however well you maintain it. But a lot of people dont see that. It's the throw away society.
