As other has stated the “park pawl” is not releasing. The cable that pulls in in and out may need to be adjusted or freed up as it may have got moisture and debris inside of it. Check each end of the part cable and make sure that the seals / wipers are on it. If not, replace the cable as it will cause nothing but problems. Also, the spring that pulls the park paw in and out may be weak and need to be replaced.
If the park pawl does hang up, put it in reverse and slowly let the inching peddle out. A lot of time this will release it. Be careful as the last thing that you want to do is break the pawl. If you break it, you’re going to have to do a double split to fix it.
DO NOT be afraid to use the inching peddle as it was designed to be used just like a clutch. I rebuilt my 1965 John Deere 4020 powershift transmission last fall. The tractor has had a JD158 loader on it for the past 30 years and the transmission has been bullet proof and never been touched until last fall. We have owed this tractor since 1970.
After 50 years of use and 30 years of loader abuse the powershift was slipping. It was slipping because the drive plates and separator plates were just worn out from old age much like your knees…
I had $5500.00 into it and did the work myself. This included replacing numerous other seals and parts that were not associated with the powershift. I did this as the tractor was open and there was not better time to replace them than now. If I would have taken this to the dealer I would have had $10,000.00 into it. Even at $10,000.00 it cheaper than buying a used JD4020 that you have no history, I know what I have and it was worth the $5500.00 to repair it. Rebuild a synchro transmission and your eyes will bulge.
