I knew it was going to come at some point, it's just the suddenness of it that threw me for a loop. Originally the plan was for mom and dad to farm until they were ready to retire, at which point the land would be sold. Grandma passed over my parents and willed it to myself and 4 older brothers, one of which passed away back in 2008 while running in the Little Rock marathon. No kids so his portion ultimately goes to mom and dad.
Through the greed of another brother who I used to be close to, he started a lawsuit a few years ago that when it finally made it to court, forced the sale of the land early. No takers yet, but once it's sold it'll have a crop of houses planted and that will be it's last crop. The top soil will be stripped, retention ponds dug, and the barn torn down all over greed. My brother, though I don't admit to many that we are related any more, gas been making life miserable for my parents over the last few years, keeping an ever watchful eye on them and any time they had something out of place, he was the first one to call the authorities.
In order to keep going, there would have to be serious
capital input. Something that in no way would ever give a return on the investments, even with the government grants dad had gotten over the years to help cover some of the expenses. I urged him personally to atleast sell the cows as that was where most of the trouble was coming from, but he refused, and kept having more and more issues.
Finally one day last week I got a message from him starting he was having an auction and he left it at that. I didn't get a chance to go out there or talk to him until yesterday, at which point he said everything is going.
I can't say I'm impressed with the auctioneer so far add it sounds like they struck a deal, and they'll just show up the day of the sale, without lending any help or support leading up to it.
I personally haven't been able to give them as much time lately either as I have my own family now and I was spending far too much time away from them, just trying to keep dad going without ever expecting anything in return. I enjoy running the equipment, and don't mind the occasional break down, but when my entire year from April through November revolves around something that I get no return from, it's hard to stay on task, and even harder to stay away from home and let my own projects go, or let my own house fall apart in the mean time.
I'll miss it, and maybe some day I can purchase atleast a few acres I can call my own, but it'll never be the same.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Not a place one would associate with farms or farm machinery. I credit my parents for instilling a lot of good values, a respect for learning, a knowledge of various skills and a little knowledge of farming in me, amo
