Tate & Lyle bought an elevator at Parnell, IL several years ago. They had been in a bidding war with ADM and lost over the Birkbeck elevator. With big bucks in hand they bought this run down facility, wood house, tanks that had not been emptied out in MANY years, junk office and storage building, etc. I heard they paid $750 - 900,000. Upper management has lost customers, so it sits until fall. After this explosion, they NOW decide to put in alarms during season after all of these years. So they shut it down after starting the season. What few customers they have, had to deliver their grain to Leroy, 10 miles north. Then peacemeal, they took some corn in at 17% or lower and later beans after installing and wiring alarms. They are still working on it. They don't have sensors that check the grain dept. Help has to climb the leg at all times to check grain depth.
I farm 3 miles away and used to haul there until their deducts were unreasonable. I feel sorry for the help getting jacked around by a couple jecks in Decatur but this seems to happen in life anymore. The loss of life is tragic. With all of their safety meeting and requirements, you wonder how this happens, but it does.
