Joe, I used to have a 02 GMC 2500HD extended cab short box 6.0. It was a great truck. Got rid of it at 180k. Only did spark plugs, exhaust manifold bolts, trans cooler lines, fuel pump, and rebuild the rear differential. Usually by that time the transmission is reaching the end of its life. Transfer cases on those usually wear a hole in themselves by 130k. This is Minnesota so the rockers were pretty much gone. I traded for an 08 just like it. I would advice you consider doing the same. The 6 speed transmission they put in the newer body style along with 3.73s gets better MPG empty. Up to about 16. And it will do around 10 towing a car trailer. Plus they don't seem to rust as bad, other than above the rear wheel wells I've seen some starting. My 02 I got $4000 on trade. Blue book is $5000, but it needed tires and brakes. My 08 was a little under $20k, with just under 100k on it. Just something you may want to look into. If you towed with both, you would want the 6 speed. Also, I believe the 6.0 was bumped up a little over the years. I've been told like a 40 horse difference between early 2000's and now? Not sure on that.
