There is a failure phenomena with large bulk storage vessels called thermal ratcheting. Basically the metal shell of a full silo will expand during a warm day when the sun is on it. The material inside settles down slightly. The silo gets cold at night and the shell contracts. It can't because the material inside is now holding it back so the metal stretches to a slightly larger diameter. This happens repeatedly over a few days or weeks and finally the silo just bursts open. Once the bottom of the shell bursts open the vertical structure is gone and it falls over.
