Several of our fields were ( and are) 1/2 mile long and flat...one round and you were one Happy Camper..watching the steady FIRE out of the exhaust ( WD-45 w/4x14")...
Or just loving hearing those JD "B"s (with straight pipes) plowing or working ground together, hearing the exhaust Barks go IN and OUT of sync..!!!
Dad's WD-45 had a straight pipe( maybe close to 4") and you could easily see when he reached the far end..there would be about a 3 Ft flame rise from the exhaust as he throttled down to turn at the field's end..!! In those days, all we had was 2 '52 JD "B" and one WD-45 AC, so they all were working most of the time.. That was back in the late 1950's and into the 60's.. Loved to see the Muffler on my WD-45 get so hot ( RED), and with about a FOOT of Blue flame above it GLOWED in the dark...darned near bright enough to plow without the lights..! The 2 of us could turn 50 Acres in one full day, together...THEN, ya were about satisfied running one for a while..!!
