It was the day after the 1960 election, when Kennedy won by a whisker over Nixon. My family (dedicated Republicans and vocal protestants), had worked very hard to elect Nixon. As a teenager of 16, I was disheartened. All the bad things I had heard about Kennedy were now on the horizon. I said to my mother that I disliked Kennedy and did not want support him to be our President. She said “ Son, I know how you feel and it is very disappointing, but he is now our president and he will do the best job he can to lead our country. We may not agree with him on all the issues, but it is our country. It is time to quit complaining and get back to work. He needs our support and backing because he is now our leader, so lets get behind him and be good loyal American citizens."
Sometimes I am a little surprised as I look back and reflect on the depth of mother’s simple patriotism and country wisdom.
By the way. Fifty six years later, all the horrible things I had heard about Kennedy seem pretty insignificant in retrospect.
