I just purchased a 154 Lo Boy a couple months back and it does exactly what you describe. I just quickly bump the PTO in and out of engagement a few times then leave it engaged. This allows the deck to pick up speed and not kill the engine.
Never heard a lot of good things about the Lo Boys but for the money it seems to be a pretty decent mower.
